Fearless Friday will be a little delayed today due to the holiday. The majority of readers enjoy these on the weekends anyway, so enjoy your holiday Friday and I promise a special treat when you return.
The Universe has such an amazing way of responding to exactly what we need when we need it. I’ve recently observed a situation that is both very sad and rather amusing at the same time. It reminds me of a very similar scenario that occurred a few years ago and a post that I recently wrote:
A woman in our community had a little candle and gift shop where she sold her handcrafted soaps and jewelry. I often suggested to her that she change her hours to be open when people had a chance to come in and shop since I frequently drove by and found the shop to be closed. The shop was open in the early part of the day during the week and on Saturdays, missing out on the heavy early evening traffic that passed by every single day. I can’t remember what her reasons were for not changing her hours but I do remember that she frequently complained that her business did not do well. It so happened that several people, including myself, started our own businesses within the same period of time. According to her, this created too much competition and we, as her “so-called friends” were “stabbing her in the back” by choosing to create related businesses. One woman created a clothing line and this was unacceptable since she sold t-shirts in her store. I was learning to make soap and this was a direct betrayal although I did not have a “business.” I had, however, begun my clay business and she followed suit, but somehow this did not qualify as the same thing.
The end result was that she closed her shop, claiming we had forced her out of business. Never mind that she did have a small but very loyal customer base and that she was in the process of filing a malpractice suit over a botched back surgery. In order to win the suit, she had to stop working.
My day job puts me in the car for up to half of my day, so any reading that I want to do must be done on tape or CD. Yesterday I listened to “The Secret” and it happened that I chose CD #3, which includes a chapter on being competitive and the law of attraction.
Competition is rooted in fear and a belief that there is not enough. When we focus our thoughts on lack, we attract more lack. When we are focused on fear that anyone or anything can take away from us, guess what shows up? More people of the same mind, who will compete with us. Running a business is challenging enough without worrying about what everyone else is doing, don’t you think?
When we are focused on the “competition” and what other people are doing, we are not focused on our own dreams and can not possibly be thinking creatively. Instead, we are focused on what we think we need to compete with. This often results in trying to duplicate what the other person is doing instead of coming up with our own creative and original ideas whether we realize it or not. When we are wrapped up in feelings of fear and lack, we are not focusing on our dream. The energy that should be directed toward and invested in our dream and going – guess where? Into the “competition’s” dream!
“When you compete, you cannot win, even if you think you have.”
Insecure people who are invested in power and control end up getting exactly the opposite of what they want and causing themselves undue stress and anxiety. For many, this results in physical illness. In the case of the story I mention above, that person ended up giving up their dream and their business.
Men do this with aggressive games of power. Women seem to do it with catty and bitchy methods and put more emotion into it. Frankly ladies, I’m embarrassed for us. This behavior contributes to the patriarchal attitude that women are not qualified to run businesses or countries and is one of the things that puts that glass ceiling above our heads.
Life is not meant to be a struggle. Life is meant to be easy, joyful and fun. Imagine how free we can feel when we forget about what everyone else is doing and just focus on our own dream. Imagine the feelings of excitement and anticipation that we are free to feel when we focus only on the good things that are coming to us! Are you picking up on the keyword here? It’s “Freedom.”
Focus on your own dream. Let the “competition” worry about their own dream and experience feelings of lack if that’s what they choose. Know that what you desire is an absolute fact, because we are never given the desire without the ability to make it happen.
As always, Mike Dooley’s Notes From The Universe e-mail had just what I needed today that fits perfectly with this blog:
Do you know what happens, Parthena, when folks distrust the trustworthy?
They begin attracting the untrustworthy.
Ain’t pretty.
And for those who trust the untrustworthy?
Yeah, they begin attracting the trustworthy.
Trust me,
The Universe
Have a safe and happy Fourth, and please take a moment to remember those who are fighting for our freedom.

Wow! What a wonderful post and oh so true. How sad that this woman was slinging unkind words at others when she had no one to blame but herself. This recent situation we have all encountered shows how far someones interest in power and control can go. Let us all take time to look deep into ourselves and focus on our dreams. Have a wonder 4th my dear!
Wonderfully written article. Wise.
I like your post, very enlightening. I also added your website to the Secret Website Directory: The Secret Directory, Listing of Law of Attraction Websites
Competition can be a good thing if used properly…..I have found in my profession that it forces me to stretch myself. To always be looking for new ways to express myself, through my floral & jewelry designs. Which benefits me and my customers…..
You cannot change what your competition is doing & it will drive you crazy trying to do so….you only have the freedom & the control to change what you are doing…Use competition as learning tool….not a vendetta.
Nicely done, Parthena!
I hear there is a new movie called The Compass that has teachers from The Secret and The Opus. I don’t know why, I just have a good feeling about this one.
I found it at http://www.thecompass.tv
Does anyone know anything. I looks pretty cool. Cannot wait!
Thanks for reading, everyone. Yes, this post was inspired by what happens when power and control enter into the picture. Not so pretty.
Jafran, thank you, and I will add your site to my directory as well!
Becky, I haven’t heard of that movie yet but Oprah recently had a show about Louise Hay’s new DVD, “You Can Heal Your Life.” I’m really excited about that one because her book of the same title changed my life!

You nailed this one….
Since I’ve started my website I’ve notice that a lot of people kind of help you but they don’t really help you when they can. And I believe it is because they feel like you are going to get ahead of them if they help you out.
Hi Tracy,
Thanks for reading. I think we all have a little bit of that fear but honestly, not everyone is going to like our stuff and is going to buy someone else’s! So there’s just no sense in investing time being fearful of competition. I believe that the fear will constrict the flow of the blessings coming our way.
Its really comforting to read this. It really relates to my situation. Ive a 7mths baby girl whom i adore so much . To me she’s perfect. But if u know moms, they love to compare milestones of their babies. but not me. My sister is doing it to me to the point of comparing my baby with her bro-in-law’s baby. the way she says it makes me feel that my lil girl is not progressing enough compared to that other baby. So i resented her way of saying it all cos i feel that baby’s milestones are unique and subjective. comparing with others makes me feel that my baby lacks something and that is not the right way. All i know is My lil girl is perfect as she is and she will flourish naturally.
